Auto Accidents
View coverage types, reporting procedures, and the repair process for accidents involving university-owned, rented, or personal vehicles used for Penn State business.
Accident Management Process
Complete the following actions.
- Contact law enforcement.
- Notify Fleet Operations of disabled vehicles.
- Alert rental agency when applicable
- Collect driver and passenger names, vehicle descriptions, and insurance information.
- Gather witness names, addresses, and contact information.
- Document damage and the accident scene with photographs.
Claims Process
Report all accidents involving vehicles used for university business.
- Complete the Vehicle Accident Report Form (PDF) within 24 hours.
- Located in fleet vehicle visor packs.

University Park

Commonwealth Campus
- Select a repair shop or contact Risk Management.
Penn State Health
- Email Risk Management at psuclaims@psu.edu.
Insurance Coverage
Business areas are responsible for a $1,000 collision or $500 comprehensive deductible.
Penn State Owned Vehicle
- Auto Liability: Covers defense costs and claim payments for authorized drivers when negligence results in injury or property damage to others
- Physical Damage: Covers collision or comprehensive damage
- Employee Injuries: Covered by Workers' Compensation
Rental Vehicle
- Penn State Auto Liability: Coverage extends beyond other valid coverage.
- Big Ten Contracted Suppliers: Auto liability and vehicle damage coverage included with discounted rates from National Car Rental and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
- Other Suppliers: Requires purchase of auto liability and vehicle damage coverage.
Personal Vehicle
- Penn State mileage reimbursement includes insurance costs.
- Penn State automobile liability applies after the exhaustion of the vehicle owner's personal coverage.
- Penn State does not cover physical damage for privately-owned vehicles.
